Photo Class: Homework

This week's photo class homework...

I want you to look up the sunrise and sunset times which are easily available at www.weather.com or in the local paper. Pick out a scene that will have nice even light on it at sunrise or sunset. This means that the sun is rising or setting behind you! I want you there at right at sunrise and for the next 30 minutes or 30 minutes before sunset and up until that sun sinks to the horizon. You will be amazed at the way the light changes in that time. Keep shooting as that light changes. You will certainly have a favorite here and it will most likely be the one with the most golden light. THEN it is time to return to that same spot in the middle of the day and shoot a picture of the same composition when the sun is high in the sky. This is IMPORTANT stuff and the comparison will blow you away. Keep in mind, sunrise might not get light on the scene at exactly the moment the sun rises according to the “official” time you find in the paper or on the web. There could be trees, buildings, or a hill behind you that keep the light from hitting the scene in front of you at that exact time. Just wait for it and you will see when the light hits!

I want ONE PAIR of images with the same composition shot in golden light and also mid day. I also want to see one sunny 16 exposure as well!

If the weather has you socked in with clouds then cloudy skies are a great time to shoot dusk shots like I outlined in the Times Square shot!

Mid-Day #1 (1/80 F16 ISO100)

Golden light #2 (1/125 F4.0 ISO200)

Sunny 16 #3 (1/60 F16 ISO100)

Analiza, Lovely shots here! Your sunny 16 shot came out well, although you are at 1/60 sec there and if you were metering this composition the reason it's a little off is because the shaded side of the tree is facing you which the meter will see, and try to bring up a little. So, with sunny 16, you can just set the numbers and shoot, knowing that everything in the sun will be perfectly exposed. The mid day vs golden light shot is shocking. He actually looks like a different person! Nice work on the lesson! A perfect picture for the golden light shot! Bryan
