Happy Holidays from the Quiroz Wolf Family!

Dear Family and Friends,

Happy Holidays and almost 2020! We hope your year has been filled with love, joy, and adventure. See here for our holiday card and here for our 3-minute holiday video.

Our most recent news is that Analiza transitioned from EHTP and just accepted a position as Executive Director for Neighborhood Charter Schools (NCS), a small network of charter schools in the Bronx and Harlem. NCS has a strong academic and social-emotional model and particularly caters to students with autism. She is thrilled and will start in December.

Alex is now into his third year in the Treasury at Bank of America, focused on liquidity risk.

And on the family front, our theme for 2019 has been…
We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re gonna catch a big one. What a beautiful day. We’re not scared!

Although Analiza is often scared…

Our cheesy bear pun updates:
  • Analiza and Alex are bearly keeping up with Bryson (7) and Scarlet (3). Bryson blazed by us long ago with chess (he won 8th at nationals) and will likely be able to ski blacks with us this season. Scarlet enjoys swimming (even tries to dive) and rock climbing after her brother and will start skiing this year.
  • After seeing almost no books for kids with Asian role models, Bryson and Analiza published their children's book Asian-Americans Who Inspire Us. It has been a bear of a project, and we hope you will check it out!
  • Analiza and Alex went on a kidless trip to Slovenia and Croatia and ran into a mama grizzly and her 3 cubs. More here.
  • On a Disney cruise, we got to see grizzlies up close again while in Alaska. Analiza opted for the Do It Yourself option, booking a seaplane and getting dropped off in the wild with seven grizzlies. More here.
  • Less bears but more mosquitoes and horse flies. Welcome to our canoe trip in Maine for a week. On the plus side, we camped next to a waterfall and spotted lots of wildlife including a moose! More here.
  • Analiza had to bear with her Antarctica trip getting canceled yet again. She, Bryson and her family did a substitute trip to South Korea, the North Korean border, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Bryson got to feed a crocodile, stick his finger in a honey comb filled with bees, and drive a boat through the Floating Village! More here.
  • Bryson’s grandma took Bryson to Hawaii to learn about Pearl Harbor. Analiza crossed her fingers that Bryson’s bathtub snorkeling practice would suffice, and thankfully he stayed afloat swimming with dolphins and manta rays. Bryson even got to feed some octopus and check out whales up close. More here.
  • A bear of a Taquitz rock climb. Alex forgot our tent poles (not too terrible) AND Analiza’s rock climbing harness (pretty terrible). Alex’s suggestion, “How about wearing some slings instead?’” Slings = nylon rubber bands. Analiza responded, “No thank you” (or maybe not so polite). Add to that climbing in 100 degree weather and scaling a tree covered in fiery red ants. More here.
  • Finally, Alex and Analiza bearly survived our two year gut renovation - and are miraculously still happily married.

Closing out to save you from more polarizing puns. Wishing you a Beary Happy New Year!

Love and hugs,
Analiza, Alex, Bryson & Scarlet

Bryson's Hunter Presentation on Asia Trip

Bryson's teacher, Ms. Lobelle, was kind enough to let Bryson share his experiences with his classmates from his Asia trip.

Afterwards, Ms. Lobelle shared this with families:

Our Trip to Asia (minus the long flight!)

On December 4th, Class 2L embarked on a journey to Asia! Bryson, along with his parents, joined our class for an exciting and super informative presentation on his recent travels to South Korea, Cambodia, and Vietnam. We took a virtual tour via a PowerPoint presentation, watched a fun video, and even got to go home with an elephant keepsake! The class learned so much about the rich history of these countries and how the unique stories of each place shapes the people, culture, and landmarks that still exist there today. A big thank you to Bryson and his mother, Analiza Quiroz Wolf, for teaching us all something new this month! (Check out their book, too - Asian-Americans Who Inspire Us!)

Video: South Korea, DMZ, Vietnam, Cambodia

Analiza's Antartica trip got cancelled yet again (3rd time is the charm?!), so we booked a trip to Asia instead. I pulled Bryson out of school for a couple weeks so we could learn up close and personal about the culture including the wars (Vietnam, Korea, Khmer Rouge), animals (Bryson got to feed a crocodile, hold a bee comb, and carry a python), wonders of the world (including Angkor Wat), delicious food (like amok in Cambodia and fruit like jackfruit, lychee, and dragonfruit), amazing technology (like the virtual reality cafes), and nature (like visiting Mekong Delta and the rice terraces in Vietnam). Bryson even got to drive a boat through the Floating Village in Siem Riep!

Video to the tune of Bryson's favorite song: Old Town Road
