We are one short of a touchdown – just need to see sparring
bears. And boy did we see them. Even Brad and our driver Ward said that we hit
the bonanza with five separate sessions of sparring duels, and three and even
four bears spectating. We also had bears visiting us up close on four separate
occasions coming up on their hind legs right up below my window. For all the
awesomeness of having a mega-distance lens, the one bummer is that it is tough
to take photos up close. But I did get some great video footage! Thank goodness
for the iPhone.
We also some another mom and coy - this time they were frantically running from some male bears. We also saw a snowy owl (too fast to take photos) and the Ithaca - a ship that was abandoned and left there for decades because it is not worth it to move the ship to another location due to cost.
We ended the day with a talk by a historian, rover driver,
boat owner, retired National Park Service agent (from New Jersey) who shared
stories about Churchill. Apparently, the Hudson Bay was named after Mr. Hudson
who unfortunately had his crew declare mutiny and kick him out.
Whew what a trip!
