Dear Friends,
Happy holidays! We hope you are safe and well. Here and attached is our holiday card and here is our holiday video and our 1 second everyday.
For us, 2021 was about doing our best to be safe while still having adventures and being outside as much as possible.
What a year! Alex kicked off the year breaking his foot while solo rock climbing (with a rope!) and spent two hours self-rescuing back to the car. On the good side, with Alex out for the ski season, Analiza, Bryson, and Scarlet had white glove service with Alex driving them to the slopes each weekend. Bryson is blazing past Analiza, and Scarlet is already using poles. We packed in 55 ski days and it’s now the kids’ favorite activity.
Even with crutches, Alex wanted to get in on the snow action. He and Bryson built an igloo in the backyard when it was 10 degrees outside and slept in it. Analiza and Scarlet snuggled up in bed (and laughed) inside.
Three of us got bee stings. Scarlet got one while we were canoeing for a week in the back country in Montana - same trip where we got caught canoeing in a lightning thunderstorm and Bryson fell out of the canoe. Thankfully he can swim! A raccoon cut through our tent and on a hike, we ran into a Mama and baby bear cub 30 feet away. Whew!
Scarlet started Kindergarten and loves to follow her brother - whether skiing, rock climbing, playing chess, or reading. Bryson handed her a 400 page tome Land of Stories and said, “I think you’ll like this - it’s about fairytales.” And she shocked us by reading half the book on our flight cross country and the other half on the way back. She also saw her brother waterski and said, “I want to do that too.” But the skis were too big on her so how did we do it? Alex somehow balanced her on his feet as he waterskiied and they were up for over 3 minutes!
Bryson is now in 4th grade and loves baseball, especially pitching. We put him on his first unaccompanied flight last summer, and we freaked out when he almost missed his connection.
Analiza and Bryson are grateful that Asian Americans Who Inspire Us was chosen to be included on the Gold House 2021 Book List. We continue to be passionate about sharing stories from diverse communities and with November being Native American Heritage month are in the process of launching the second in the series, Native Americans Who Inspire Us. We would love to have you join our Book Launch Team and get an e-copy of the book Native Americans Who Inspire Us before it goes public.
Analiza transitioned from CEO of Neighborhood Charter Schools to focus on her passion of diversity, equity and inclusion and specifically as an executive coach for women and leaders of color. She runs an 8 week cohort leadership program for senior mom leaders called Boss Mamas and has a podcast - also called Boss Mamas. The next cohort starts January.
Alex is in Treasury at Mizuho and enjoys his work and his team although he hasn’t yet gone into the office! He has the longest hair in the family, proud that he hasn’t cut it since the pandemic started.
Analiza and Alex have been able to take some fun trips together sans kids. We did a jet ski, a 3 day Phish run in Atlantic City and a rock climb and canyoneering trip in Red Rocks. Thanks to the grandparents for taking care of the kids!
We hope you are safe and well during these crazy times. Happy holidays!
Love and hugs,
Analiza, Alex, Bryson,
Scarlet
