What’s Happening in 1-Guss
Reading: We read Miss Nelson is Missing. We listed traits that describe Ms. Nelson and Ms. Viola Swamp. We also discussed setting, problem, and solution.
Word Study: We have continued learning about long a and the _ase and _aze word families.
Writing: We have learned about the parts of Writer’s Workshop (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). We also discussed the reasons writers write, which include to communicate, share information, entertain, and record memories. The children have been hard at work writing personal narratives. We are now writing stories across a number of pages.
Mathematics: We are continuing to study different numbers. We are also decomposing larger numbers and looking at place value. In addition to exploring numbers, we are learning about money. We have a class piggy bank, where we deposit one cent a day. Each cent represents how many days we’ve been in school. During morning meeting, we discuss various coins we can use to represent a certain amount of money.
Science: We are learning about force and motion. The children have also explored push and pull forces. During our lessons, we looked at various playground equipment. We sorted the equipment into those that need a push to use and those that need a pull. We also discovered that swings require both a push and pull.
