What’s Happening in 1-Guss
Reading: We have continued learning about characters. We are listing character traits and comparing characters. Our reading assessment is complete. We will start our reading groups soon!
Word Study: We have continued learning about long a and the _ame and _ave word families.
Writing: In Writer’s Workshop, one of our lessons focused on what good writers do. Good writers write, use strategies, have conferences with teachers, reread their work, and try their best. We also discussed what writing look like, sound like, and feel like. The children each filled in a map of their heart, brainstorming things that are important to them. This will be a reference when they’re having trouble deciding what they should write about. We also started writing personal narratives, true stories about our lives.
Mathematics: We have been decomposing numbers, looking at different ways to make different numbers. During Number of the Day, we are also looking at place value and adding and subtracting a certain about to or from the number of the day. For example: 4 more than 20 is 24 and 4 less than 20 is 16. The children have also been introduced to two Investigations math centers: Building Cubes and Puzzle Fills. In Building Cubes, the children have to count out 50 linking cubes (we discussed ways to count them – groups of 2, 5, 10) and create something using all 50 cubes. In Puzzle Fills, the children have to use different combinations of pattern blocks to fill in a puzzle. Then, they count and record how many of each block they used.
Science: This week has been filled with two STEAM challenges! Our first challenge was Take Flight! We discussed optimism and perseverance, encouraging the children to keep testing different ideas, not give up, and feel positive about their designs. In groups of two and three, the children had to research on the iPad different paper airplane designs. Next, they decided on which one to make and sketch the design. Once their paper planes were made, we tested how far each plan flew. The children are currently working on improving their designs and testing their redesigned planes this week. We also continued our Build a Better Backpack challenge. We discussed the structures and functions of various items people use, including watering cans, combs, and earmuffs. They learned that these items are made in factories and were designed by engineers. We also compared various technologies (backpack, pencils, soccer ball) to things that are natural (bird’s nest, lightening). The children found and listed various technologies around our classroom. We will continue this challenge this coming week.
