Bryson had his first chess tournament. 4 rounds, 4 hours. He won one, drew two, and lost one. Intense affair. Check out the first two pics with parents crowding the hallways listening to the rules.
10/11/2017 Chess Coffee Chat
Sunil spoke first: Sunil started the Hunter program in 1979. Farai is the main instructor, and just made final requirement for becoming Grandmaster!
Ms. Roy briefly spoke next: • Critical Thinking is the cornerstone of Hunter, and chess is important to that • Chess is helpful in future • She is a strong advocate for the chess program • She said you may come in to watch a chess lesson—you will see how engaged the children are
Sunil spoke again: • You may see big trophies in the lobby, but competition is a small part of the Hunter Chess Program • Why Chess? Because Chess introduces critical thinking at a young age o the type of thinking done in sciences in 5th grade and above Understanding and evaluating situations
Then Farai spoke next about curriculum • Kindergarten o Introduce chess board o Name squares (ie a1, a2, a3, … h8) o Identify diagonals o How pieces move • 1st Grade o Should be able to checkmate o Play full game understanding each part of the game Opening Mid-game End-game • Encourage after school playing for fun
Sunil spoke again • Chess magnet school online o Logins will be sent home when they become available o There is no chat feature (safer for little computer users!) o It’s a computer tutorial program o Solve puzzles o Has lessons o Great for reviewing o Self pacced o You can play against computer when the computer has fewer pieces o Teachers can see your work online and generate reports • When you play with your child o DON’T LOSE ON PURPOSE You kid will know o TAKE A COUPLE OF PIECES OFF THE BOARD AND PLAY YOUR BEST Ie play without your rooks, or your queen You kid will beat you and feel good about it Add back pieces as your kid gets better • Even if you don’t master the whole game, you can master parts o Ie rooks vs king checkmate • Hunter teaches game as a whole from start so kids can see the big picture
