Bryson's Class Photos & Curriculum Notes

There are two K classes, 25 children per class. Bryson is in Ms. Guss' class in the first photo below, first row in the red shirt.

Hunter's curriculum is pretty incredible. Check out my notes below.

French: They have language 2x week 40 minutes. Next year, they will switch to Spanish. Then after that, they will pick one of these languages to focus on.

Not just academics but also social emotional learning: What does being gifted mean? At Hunter, they encourage students to ask questions, try their best (praise effort not doing things fast or right). Deliberately read texts by male and female scientists about trying something and not working to show that it's ok. Kindergartens think that their experience is universal so we should try to help them see other people's perspectives and feelings. How do characters feel and respond?

Marissa Wolf: Math Specialist
New curriculum from Pearson (investigations): kids will build and decompose numbers. Goal is for kids to understand what does numbers are. Example: a foot - this has changed over the years. Maybe we should define Hunter foot. What data do we need? All kids data is going to be up on a board for them to see.

Mr. Barnet: PE teacher
He introduces meters, decimeter, grams... PE is about physical literacy, how should body move. We don't focus on sports; instead focus on running, jumping, throwing, yoga. Thinking and inquiry, communication, application of focus area. Also cross-curriculum learning (Spanish and French and Math, especially metric season).

Barbara Shostl: Librarian
2 week check-out
She highlights books based on heritage month.
We will have an author event where parents will learn about children literacy

Ayanna Lowe: Music teacher
Interdisciplinary: math, science, literature - how do we make sound? Through vibration, categorize notes and distinguish patterns.  Kids will develop dexterity with keyboard.
Two upcoming events: 1) October 20 10am, 2) December 15 winter festival, 3) Fridays singing. Multicultural - explore backgrounds in songs.

Integrated technology: Model of technology is integrated, create documentary at end of year. Get exposed to computer science.

Social studies: studying communities in NYC, K focus on Manhattan.

Science: taught by Ms. Guss, going to be learning coding doing some computer coding eventually later this year

Classroom learning with Ms. Guss:

Math and Reading differentiated and will be integrated with 1st grade
Curriculum is driven by kids and their interest
Handwriting without tears

Field trips and 4th grade buddies

Baking apple crisp

Volunteering - can be an hour or two or whenever

For the semester

Math Specialist notes below from PTA Mtg

Marissa Wolf is Hunter's Math Specialist and shared the curriculum that Hunter uses. It is called Investigations 3, a K-5 inquiry based approach to math. Hands-on student centered learning and data-driven instruction.

Rules are discovered by Kids. It is more important to understand the concept than the process.

"Each time one prematurely teaches a child something he could have discovered himself, that child is kept from inventing it and consequently from understanding it completely." Piaget

Children get the information to discover the information on his own. We are helping Kids have the "light bulb moment" when they figure out something for themselves.

Inquiry based mathematics is having students collaborate, investigate, and take part in problem-based learning. More than one way to solve, explain and justify reasoning.

Family involvement - there is an online learning tool to support Kids at home.

You can see your child's assessments by going to "completed work" where it will show you what they need to work on and the questions that they got wrong. So you can be a partner in your child's learning.

Your child will see the result immediately - interesting to see how your child will react. Marissa thinks that this is good for child to make it less emotional.

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!  We are learning so much in class K-G.

We read the big book, To Town, this week.  We also began to learn about the short a sound.  The -an word family was reviewed and we listed words that belong in the -at word family.  We have also moved on from Kevin Henkes and are now reading books by Leo Lionni.  Last week, we wrote our names on our Handwriting Without Tears book and practiced our pencil correctly.

In mathematics, we continued to explore different ways to use pattern blocks.  We also learned about patterns.   Patterns repeat themselves.  During our discussion, we listed different ways we can make patterns, ABAB, ABBABB, ABCABC, and then created patterns with our pattern blocks.  The children also drew patterns that are now hanging in the classroom.

We read more books about apples.  After reading some books, we discussed and listed the parts of an apple.  Next, we watched a short video (about 4 minutes) about Johnny Appleseed on BrainPopJr.

A couple of reminders:

1.  If you have changed your child's dismissal plan, for example no longer taking a Hawk's Nest class or now riding the school bus, please send in an updated dismissal plan.  Do not just email a list of changes.   Those who have not had changes, your dismissal plan is good for the semester.

2.  Please send folders to school each day.

See you soon!

Jen
